Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have rescued 46 students following an attempted abduction by suspected terrorists at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Monguno, Borno State.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday, July 19, 2026, at about 1:30 a.m. The facility is currently being used as temporary hostel accommodation for students of the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno.
Military authorities said suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) invaded the school premises in an attempt to abduct the students. The attackers were reportedly aided by suspected collaborators before security operatives swiftly intervened.
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, working alongside personnel of the Nigeria Police Mobile Force (MOPOL), engaged the terrorists in a gun battle and successfully thwarted the attempted abduction.
All 46 students at the facility were rescued, with no student taken away by the attackers.
However, the military confirmed that some students lost their lives after being hit by stray bullets during the exchange of gunfire between the terrorists and security personnel. The exact number of casualties has not yet been disclosed.
The rescued students were immediately evacuated from the scene and given medical attention, while security agencies have launched investigations to identify and apprehend individuals suspected of assisting the attackers.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of schools and students in Nigeria’s North-East region, where terrorist groups have repeatedly targeted educational institutions and civilian communities.
Security has since been reinforced around the area as military authorities continue operations aimed at tracking down the fleeing attackers and preventing further threats.
