One of such distinguished Africans is Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Rasaq Kayode Olanrewaju, the Managing Director of NAFIL Properties, an accomplished military strategist, aviation expert, administrator, scholar and one of Nigeria’s most respected senior military officers. This week, NASTV Africa proudly celebrates him as its Personality of the Week, recognising an outstanding Nigerian from Ilorin whose remarkable life perfectly reflects our vision of “Manifesting Africa’s Greatness.”
Born on 19 June 1973 in Kaduna, Nigeria, Air Vice Marshal Olanrewaju traces his roots to Ile Budo, Okekere, Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State. Ilorin has produced many distinguished sons and daughters who have made invaluable contributions to national development, and AVM Olanrewaju proudly stands among the city’s finest ambassadors.
Married with children, he has successfully combined a fulfilling family life with an outstanding military career spanning more than three decades. He enlisted into the Nigerian Air Force on 17 August 1990 and was commissioned as an officer on 16 September 1995 after completing his military training at the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna. Since then, his career has been defined by excellence, patriotism and unwavering commitment to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
What distinguishes Air Vice Marshal Olanrewaju is his uncommon passion for knowledge and continuous self-development. He firmly believes that leadership is strengthened through learning, and his academic journey reflects this philosophy.

A graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, he further specialised in Airspace Management and Air Traffic Services, earning professional qualifications in Air Traffic Control, Procedural Area Control, Approach and Area Radar Control, Computer Engineering and Security Management.
His academic accomplishments include a Master of Arts in International Security and Strategy from King’s College London, a Master of Philosophy in Defence and Security Studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy, while he is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Defence and Security Studies. He has also undergone elite military training at the Royal College of Defence Studies, London, the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, the Junior Command and Staff College, and the United Nations Military Observers’ Orientation Course in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Throughout his distinguished career, Air Vice Marshal Olanrewaju has occupied some of the most strategic appointments within the Nigerian Air Force. He currently serves as the Managing Director of NAFIL Properties, a subsidiary of the Nigerian Air Force Investment Limited (NAFIL), where he is providing visionary leadership in institutional investment, corporate governance and property development.
Before assuming this office, he served with distinction as Director of Plans at the Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Chief of Staff, Special Operations Command, Bauchi, Director of Air Traffic Services, Commandant of the Air Traffic Services Training Centre, Kaduna, Commander of the 651 Base Services Group, Ikeja, Commander of the 055 Nigerian Air Force Camp VI, Lagos, Principal Staff Officer to the Chief of the Air Staff, Deputy Director of Training, Assistant Director of Air Operations at the Defence Headquarters, and Deputy Director of Air Traffic Services.
Earlier in his career, he served in several operational appointments across Abuja, Kano, Maiduguri, Kainji, Makurdi and Kaduna, spending over 16 years as an Air Traffic Control Officer, where he earned a reputation for professionalism, precision and operational excellence. His international experience also includes serving as a Member of Directing Staff at the Defence Command and Staff College, Gaborone, Botswana, and participating in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Air Vice Marshal Olanrewaju’s outstanding service has earned him numerous honours, medals and commendations, including the General Service Star, River Benue Star, Command Medal, Command Medal of Honour, and the United Nations Double Honours Medal. He also received a Letter of Commendation from the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for his exceptional role in providing airport security during the 2003 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, as well as another Letter of Commendation from the Chief of the Air Staff for his excellent performance in providing Air Traffic Services during Nigeria’s Presidential Inauguration.
During the #EndSARS protests, he was widely commended for his professionalism, civility and diplomatic approach, demonstrating that true leadership is defined not only by authority but also by wisdom, restraint and respect for human dignity.
Beyond his military accomplishments, Air Vice Marshal Olanrewaju remains committed to professional development and nation-building. He is a Member of the National Air Traffic Controllers’ Association, an Associate Member of the Nigerian Institute of Management, a Member of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, a Member of the Institute of Directors (United Kingdom), a Doctoral Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management, and a Fellow of the Association of Corporate Governance Professionals of Nigeria.
He is equally admired for his quiet support for educational initiatives and for helping many young Ilorin indigenes secure opportunities within the Nigerian Air Force and other public institutions, reflecting his enduring commitment to community development and human capital advancement.
