The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has resumed the implementation and enforcement of its Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025, following a favourable ruling by the Federal High Court in Lagos.
The Commission made the announcement on Monday, stating that the court upheld its statutory authority to regulate Nigeria’s digital lending sector and vacated the interim order that had temporarily restrained the enforcement of the regulations.
The regulations were suspended in April 2026 after the Wireless Application Service Providers Association of Nigeria (WASPAN) instituted legal proceedings challenging the FCCPC’s powers to issue and enforce the rules governing digital lending operations in the country.

With the court’s decision, the FCCPC confirmed that the regulations are once again fully operational and enforceable nationwide.
According to the Commission, the regulations are aimed at promoting responsible lending practices, protecting consumers from exploitative loan practices, and enhancing transparency and accountability among digital lending operators.
FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, said the Commission remains committed to ensuring that digital lending services operate within a fair and transparent regulatory framework while fostering innovation and financial inclusion.
The resumption of enforcement is expected to impact digital loan applications, online lending platforms, and other non-traditional consumer lenders operating in Nigeria.
The development comes amid growing concerns over unethical debt recovery practices, privacy violations, and undisclosed charges by some digital lending operators, which have attracted regulatory scrutiny in recent years.
Industry stakeholders have described the move as a significant step towards strengthening consumer protection and improving regulatory compliance within Nigeria’s rapidly growing fintech and digital lending industry.
The renewed enforcement is expected to improve regulatory compliance within Nigeria’s digital lending sector while providing better protection for consumers who rely on online lending platforms.
