The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has arrested two suspects for allegedly producing and distributing counterfeit alcoholic beverages in Lagos State.
The suspects were apprehended during enforcement operations carried out by the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate in the Mushin area of Lagos.
NAFDAC said the operation led to the discovery of an illegal alcohol production facility where various counterfeit alcoholic products were being manufactured and packaged for distribution.
Items recovered during the raid included suspected fake alcoholic beverages, bottles, labels, packaging materials, and other production equipment used in the illicit operation.
According to the agency, some of the counterfeit products bore the labels of popular local and international liquor brands, including Hennessy, Martell, Rémy Martin, Gordon’s, Jack Daniel’s, Don Julio, William Lawson’s, and Glenfiddich Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, disclosed that the suspects admitted to producing the counterfeit products during preliminary investigations.
The agency confirmed that all recovered items have been secured as exhibits while further investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the operation and facilitate the prosecution of those involved.
In a related development, NAFDAC uncovered over 450 cartons of expired salad cream stored at two locations in Oke Arin Market, Lagos. The products were subsequently evacuated to prevent their circulation in the market.
NAFDAC reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and warned individuals involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit products to desist or face the full weight of the law.
The agency also urged consumers to remain vigilant and purchase food and beverage products only from reputable and authorised outlets.
