The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that the FCT Administration is considering banning the operations of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, and tricycles (keke napep) within the Abuja city centre as part of renewed efforts to tackle insecurity.
Wike made the disclosure following a meeting of the FCT Security Council in Abuja, where security agencies reviewed the prevailing security situation and recommended additional measures to curb criminal activities across the nation’s capital.
According to the minister, intelligence reports have revealed that criminals increasingly use motorcycles to carry out robberies, evade security operatives and move freely within the city, making stricter regulations necessary.
He explained that while a complete ban across the Federal Capital Territory would be difficult to implement due to the vast nature of the territory, the administration is considering restricting the operations of motorcycles and tricycles in strategic areas of the Abuja city centre where security concerns are more pronounced.
“We cannot allow criminals to continue exploiting commercial motorcycles to perpetrate crimes. Security remains our top priority, and we will take every necessary step to protect lives and property,” Wike said.
The minister directed security agencies to identify locations where the proposed restrictions would have the greatest impact, adding that any decision reached would be based on intelligence and in the best interest of public safety.
He assured residents that the administration would continue to work closely with security agencies to strengthen surveillance, improve law enforcement and ensure the safety of people living and working in the Federal Capital Territory.
Wike also reiterated the FCT Administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order while balancing security measures with the economic realities of residents who depend on commercial transportation for their livelihoods.
The proposed restrictions have generated mixed reactions among Abuja residents. While many have welcomed the move as a necessary step to combat crime and improve security, others have expressed concern over the possible impact on thousands of commercial operators and commuters who rely on motorcycles and tricycles for daily transportation.
The FCT Administration is expected to engage relevant stakeholders and security agencies before reaching a final decision on the proposed restrictions.
