NASTV Africa Celebrates an African Physiotherapist: Ekwe Chidera Cynthia
In the field of physiotherapy, professional competence, compassion, and a commitment to continuous learning are important aspects of patient care. For Ekwe Chidera Cynthia, a Nigerian physiotherapist, these qualities are reflected in her clinical experience across different healthcare institutions and her dedication to patient assessment, rehabilitation, and recovery.
Cynthia holds a Bachelor of Medical Rehabilitation in Physiotherapy from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State. Since completing her academic training, she has continued to develop her professional skills through clinical practice, volunteer service, and additional certifications in different areas of rehabilitation.
Her professional journey includes an internship at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, where she completed rotational clinical training across neurology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, gynaecology, and cardiopulmonary units. During this period, she gained practical experience in patient management, evidence-based physiotherapy techniques, clinical documentation, and communication.
She also served as a volunteer physiotherapist at the National Hospital, Abuja, from January to March 2024, assisting with the assessment and treatment of patients with neurological, orthopaedic, and paediatric conditions under supervision.
Experience in Patient Rehabilitation
From June 2025 to May 2026, Cynthia served as a National Youth Service Corps member at Wuse District Hospital, Abuja. Her responsibilities included managing patient interactions, applying physiotherapy techniques, coordinating appointments, and contributing to departmental reporting.
Her clinical work involved the use of electrotherapy to help reduce pain and muscle spasms and improve muscle strength. She also applied manual therapy techniques, including soft tissue mobilisation, massage, and joint manipulation, to help reduce pain and improve range of motion. Thermal modalities formed another part of her practice, supporting muscle relaxation and the management of pain and inflammation.
In February 2026, she commenced part-time work as a physiotherapist at Trust Charitos Hospital, Abuja. Her responsibilities include assessing and rehabilitating patients with neurological, orthopaedic, paediatric, cardiopulmonary, and oncology-related conditions.
She also develops individualised treatment plans based on patient goals, monitors progress using standardised outcome measures, and educates patients on their conditions, preventive strategies, posture, activity modification, and prescribed home exercise programmes.
Her work involves collaboration with other healthcare professionals to support a patient-centred approach to treatment and rehabilitation.
A Commitment to Professional Development
Beyond her clinical experience, Cynthia has continued to pursue professional development through additional training and certifications.
Her certifications include Managing a Rehabilitation Team, Obtaining Informed Consent for Rehabilitation, and Conducting Rehabilitation Assessment, all obtained in 2026. She also holds certifications in Differential Diagnosis in Low Back Pain and Rheumatoid Arthritis and Physiotherapy Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis.
These qualifications complement her clinical experience and reflect her continued engagement with professional learning in physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
Her listed professional skills also include accurate clinical documentation and reporting, effective communication, appointment coordination, patient confidentiality, professional ethics, and teamwork.
