The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa, has assured Nigerians in the diaspora that the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to strengthen national security, with the aim of making the country safer and ensuring that members of the diaspora can return home without unnecessary concerns.
Musa gave the assurance during an engagement with members of the Nigerian community in Angola, according to a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde.
The meeting took place in Luanda, Angola, on the sidelines of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
The Nigerian delegation to the AU Summit, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, also used the interaction to give government representatives an opportunity to hear directly from Nigerians in Angola, address their concerns and provide immediate responses.
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa; and the Acting Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Mission in Angola, Ambassador Maxy Ogbede, were also present at the engagement.
Musa commended the Nigerian community in Angola for sustaining a cordial relationship with the country’s diplomatic mission, while stressing President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to tackling security threats across the country.
He said the government was taking steps to increase the manpower and strengthen the operational capacity of the Armed Forces of Nigeria as well as other security agencies working alongside them.
“Every sector is receiving targeted interventions to enhance our national security framework,” Musa said.
According to him, some of the security difficulties confronting the country are linked to instability in the Sahel region, with the effects extending across Nigeria’s borders.
“Some of our ongoing challenges stem from regional instability in the Sahel, which trickles across our borders.
“However, comprehensive border management measures are actively being implemented to curb these incursions.”
The Defence Minister also reiterated the administration’s commitment to incorporating credible data into national security planning and broader development strategies.
He maintained that efforts aimed at achieving sustainable peace and stability in the country were progressing.
Speaking at the event, Tunji-Ojo drew attention to the stronger data protection and identity management systems recently introduced by the government.
The Interior Minister added that improved cooperation among government agencies was already producing measurable outcomes.
On her part, Dabiri-Erewa reaffirmed NiDCOM’s commitment to serving Nigerians in the diaspora, assuring citizens that the commission remains available to address their welfare needs and facilitate opportunities that can contribute to shared national prosperity.
