The Federal Government has commenced an assessment of flood-affected sections of the Benin-Sagamu Expressway following recent heavy rainfall that disrupted traffic along parts of the critical highway.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this during an inspection of the affected areas in the Ore axis of Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State. The minister was represented by the Federal Controller of Works in the state, Engr. Olajide Hussein.
According to the Ministry of Works, the assessment is aimed at identifying the causes of the flooding and developing lasting engineering solutions to prevent future occurrences.
Umahi revealed that three major flood-prone locations had been identified along the Ondo section of the expressway. The affected areas include Agofure at Kilometre 100, Adolak Junction near the Ore Flyover Bridge at Kilometre 107, and the Agric Section at Kilometre 117.
He explained that engineers have begun technical evaluations, including hydraulic studies of existing drainage systems and culverts, to determine the most effective measures required to address the flooding. The proposed interventions include expanding drainage channels, upgrading culverts and clearing blocked waterways to improve the free flow of stormwater.
The minister attributed the flooding to the recent heavy rainfall experienced across several parts of the country, noting that the increasing impact of climate change has continued to pose significant challenges to road infrastructure.
He assured motorists and residents that the Federal Government remains committed to restoring the affected sections and implementing permanent measures to safeguard the highway against recurring flood damage.
Umahi also expressed sympathy to commuters and communities affected by the flooding, reiterating the government’s resolve to ensure the continued safety and smooth movement of vehicles along one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors.
The Benin-Sagamu Expressway serves as a major link between the South-West and South-South regions, making it a vital route for commuters and the movement of goods across the country.
