The Osun State Government has temporarily closed a section of the newly commissioned LAMECO Flyover Bridge in Osogbo following the discovery of structural defects caused by heavy rainfall, less than a month after the project was opened for public use.
The 672-metre flyover, commissioned by Governor Ademola Adeleke on July 1, 2026, developed visible cracks and a sunken asphalt surface after an overnight downpour that lasted for several hours in the state capital, raising concerns among motorists and residents over its safety.
Following the incident, the government ordered the immediate closure of the affected lane to facilitate emergency repairs and ensure the safety of road users. Traffic has since been diverted while engineers assess the extent of the damage and commence rehabilitation works.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Bashir Bello, assured residents that the defect was limited to the asphalt wearing course and did not affect the structural integrity of the flyover. He explained that the damage resulted from an unusual concentration of rainfall at a specific section of the bridge, which caused erosion beneath the asphalt layer.
The commissioner further stated that the contractor handling the project has been directed to carry out immediate remedial works at no additional cost to the state government, in line with the project’s contractual obligations.
Motorists have been advised to comply with traffic diversion measures put in place around the flyover while repairs are ongoing. Residents also expressed hope that the rehabilitation would be completed promptly to restore normal vehicular movement in the area.
The LAMECO Flyover Bridge is one of several infrastructure projects recently commissioned by Governor Adeleke’s administration as part of efforts to improve transportation and ease traffic congestion within Osogbo and its environs.
The Osun State Government reaffirmed its commitment to delivering durable and quality infrastructure, assuring the public that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure the flyover remains safe for use upon completion of the repairs.
