President Bola Tinubu has commended Team Nigeria for its impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where the country’s athletes secured a total of 24 medals.
The President described the achievement as a testament to the resilience, discipline and determination of Nigerian athletes, noting that they had once again demonstrated the nation’s immense sporting potential on the global stage.
Team Nigeria concluded its campaign with 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, finishing as Africa’s highest-ranked nation at the Games and among the top-performing countries overall.
In a statement, Tinubu congratulated the athletes, coaches and officials for their unwavering commitment and dedication, saying their outstanding performance had brought pride and honour to Nigeria.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening sports development through increased investment in modern sporting infrastructure, athlete welfare, talent identification and grassroots development programmes.
According to the President, sports remain a powerful instrument for promoting national unity, empowering young people and driving economic growth. He assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would continue to provide the necessary support to enable athletes compete successfully at international competitions.
Tinubu also pledged to intensify efforts to improve training facilities, expand opportunities for emerging talents and encourage greater private sector participation in the development of sports across the country.
Expressing confidence in the future of Nigerian sports, the President said the team’s success in Glasgow would inspire a new generation of athletes to pursue excellence while upholding the values of discipline, integrity and fair play.
The National Sports Commission also applauded Team Nigeria’s performance, describing the outing as one of the country’s most successful appearances at the Commonwealth Games in recent years. Officials attributed the impressive medal haul to improved preparation, strategic planning and the dedication of the athletes and technical crew.
Nigeria’s 24-medal tally was achieved through remarkable performances in athletics, weightlifting, para powerlifting, judo and other sporting events, with several athletes delivering personal bests and memorable victories.
